Is the Blue Lagoon Malta Worth It? An Honest Answer

It’s a fair question. The Blue Lagoon appears in every Malta travel guide, on every Instagram account that visits the island, and in every hotel lobby brochure. The hype is enormous. And then you arrive in peak season and find 10,000 other people with the same idea. So: is it actually worth it?

The Honest Answer: Yes, But It Depends Entirely on How You Get There

The Blue Lagoon genuinely is as beautiful as the photos. The water really is that colour — an almost unreal turquoise that comes from the white sandy seabed and the quality of the Mediterranean light. On a calm day, with clear visibility, it’s one of the most beautiful places you’ll swim in Europe.

The problem is that the way most visitors experience it — by public ferry, arriving at the main jetty, competing for space on the small beach and rocky ledges — significantly undermines what makes it special. If you arrive by ferry in July at 11am, you will be disappointed. The lagoon doesn’t look the same when you’re fighting for a piece of rock.

When the Blue Lagoon Disappoints

  • July or August, arriving by ferry mid-morning — you’ll be sharing the lagoon with thousands of people
  • Group boat tours that give you 90 minutes then move on — not enough time to actually enjoy it
  • Going without any shade plan — there’s very little natural shade on Comino

When the Blue Lagoon Lives Up to the Hype

  • May, June, or September — shoulder season crowds are a fraction of peak summer
  • Early morning arrival before the ferries build up — the lagoon before 9am is a different place
  • Private charter, anchored away from the ferry jetty — your skipper finds the clearest, quietest section
  • Staying long enough to really swim and snorkel — an hour is not enough to appreciate it

What About the Crystal Lagoon?

Just around the corner from the Blue Lagoon, the Crystal Lagoon is equally beautiful and sees a fraction of the visitors. If you’re on a private charter, your skipper will take you to both. Many guests end up preferring the Crystal Lagoon — the water is just as vivid and you often have it almost entirely to yourselves.

The Verdict

The Blue Lagoon is absolutely worth it — but only if you approach it right. Visit in shoulder season, arrive early, and ideally come by private charter so you can anchor where the skipper knows the water is best. Done well, it’s one of the finest swimming spots in the Mediterranean. Done badly, it’s an overcrowded beach you queued an hour to reach.

Book a private charter with Nautiful and we’ll make sure you experience the Blue Lagoon at its best — the right anchor spot, the right timing, and enough time to actually enjoy it.
