Best Time to Visit Malta: A Month-by-Month Guide

Malta is one of the few destinations in Europe where the question ‘when should I go?’ has a genuinely nuanced answer. The islands are beautiful year-round — but the experience is very different depending on the month. Here’s what you actually need to know.

The Short Answer

For a private boat charter to the Blue Lagoon and Comino: May, June, or September. You get warm, swimmable sea, reliable sunshine, and significantly fewer crowds than peak summer. For the best overall Malta holiday that combines sea time with sightseeing: May to October all works well, with June and September being the sweet spots.

Month by Month

  • January – February: Cool and quiet. Average temperatures 12–15°C. Too cold for swimming. Great for history, Valletta, and uncrowded sightseeing. Boat charters generally not operating.
  • March – April: Spring arrives. Temperatures climbing to 18–20°C. Sea still cool (17–18°C) but the islands are green and beautiful. Good for walking and history. Charter season beginning.
  • May: Excellent. 22–25°C air, sea warming to 20°C+. Crowds thin, prices lower than summer. One of the best months for a boat charter — the Blue Lagoon is peaceful and the water is perfect.
  • June: Outstanding. Long days, hot sun, sea temperature 22–24°C. Crowds building but not yet at peak. Book your charter early — dates fill up quickly from here.
  • July – August: Peak season. 32–36°C, sea at 26–28°C. The Blue Lagoon at its most crowded (up to 10,000 visitors daily). Visitor caps now in place. Book everything well in advance. A private charter is especially worth it this time of year — it’s the only way to escape the crowds.
  • September: Arguably the best month. Crowds drop sharply after the school holiday rush, but the sea stays warm (25–26°C) and the weather is still reliably sunny. Prices fall too. Highly recommended.
  • October: Still very good. Sea cools slightly to 23°C but perfectly swimmable. Weather occasionally unpredictable towards the end of the month. A good option for a late-season charter.
  • November – December: Off-season. Cooler, some rain. Beautiful for walks and culture but too cold for swimming. Charter season largely closed.

Best Time for a Boat Charter Specifically

The charter season at Nautiful runs from May through October. For the best combination of warm water, good weather, and manageable crowds at the Blue Lagoon and Comino, we recommend May, June, or September. These months offer everything summer has to offer — except the crowds.

If you’re travelling in July or August, a private charter is even more worth it than usual. The visitor cap at the Blue Lagoon means independent access is increasingly restricted — but on a private charter, your skipper knows how to anchor in the best spots before the crowds arrive. If you’re weighing up your options, our guide to how to visit the Blue Lagoon Malta without the crowds is worth reading before you book.

How Far in Advance Should You Book?

For May and June: 2–4 weeks ahead is usually sufficient, though earlier never hurts. For July and August: book as early as possible — popular weekends fill up 6–8 weeks out. For September: 2–3 weeks is typically fine. For October: usually available at shorter notice, though earlier booking guarantees your preferred date.

One More Thing: Shoulder Season is Genuinely Better

It’s worth saying directly: if you have flexibility, May and September are better experiences than July and August for almost every kind of visitor. The sea is just as warm, the sun is just as reliable, and you’ll share the Blue Lagoon with a fraction of the people. The only thing missing is the peak-season buzz — which many visitors are actively trying to avoid.
