Grand Harbour Malta by Boat — What to See

Valletta’s Grand Harbour is one of the most extraordinary natural harbours in the world. Napoleon called it the finest harbour in Europe. The Knights of St John built fortifications around it for 268 years. Today it’s a living, working harbour — cruise ships, cargo vessels, superyachts, and traditional Maltese dghajsa water taxis all sharing the same water. And the best way to see it is unquestionably from a boat.

What You See from the Water

From the water, the Grand Harbour reveals itself in a way that land-based sightseeing simply cannot match. The full scale of the fortifications becomes apparent — Fort St Angelo, Fort St Elmo, and the Cottonera Lines stretching inland. The Three Cities (Vittoriosa, Senglea, and Cospicua) sit opposite Valletta on the south shore, their medieval streets and church domes rising directly from the water’s edge.

The Upper Barrakka Gardens — Malta’s most famous viewpoint for the harbour — gives you an elevated view. From a boat, you’re inside the view. The scale is completely different.

Fort St Angelo

The great fortress at the tip of Vittoriosa was the command centre of the Knights of St John during the Great Siege of 1565. It juts into the harbour on its own promontory — from the water, the sheer scale of the fortifications is striking. The fort has been recently restored and is open to visitors, but it reads most powerfully from the sea.

The Dockyard Creek

The series of creeks on the south side of the harbour — Dockyard Creek, French Creek, Galley Creek — were the naval heart of Malta for centuries. Today they house superyachts and liveaboards alongside fishing boats. Navigating between them gives you a view of the Three Cities’ waterfront that no tourist walking route covers.

The Valletta Waterfront

The restored Baroque warehouses of the Pinto Wharf now house restaurants and bars. From the water, the sweep of the waterfront — the palazzos above, the fortifications behind, the activity on the water — is one of the great Mediterranean harbour views.

Grand Harbour by Night

The harbour is illuminated after dark and the reflection of Valletta’s golden limestone in the water is spectacular. An evening private boat charter in Malta — anchored off the Vittoriosa waterfront with the city lit up across the water — is one of the most memorable things you can do in Malta.

Nautiful includes a Grand Harbour tour option as part of our Round Malta charter. If you want to experience the harbour from the water — day or evening — find out what to expect on a Malta boat charter and let us know when you book and we’ll incorporate it into your itinerary.
